I'm Alive

We have survived our first natural disaster. We tried to make the most of the power being off and turned it into a cozy weekend in. Candles took up every surface setting the scene. After charging our laptop at the local pub we settled in bed for a movie marathon and munchies evening.
The rain has stopped and the river is slowly going back down. Everyone wanders the streets checking out the damage and making sure neighbours are ok.
Life is slowly returning to normal.

Change of plans

I have been looking forward to the Australia day long weekend for a long time. Its the first weekend since Christmas that Jason and I will have two days off in a row together. Hello mini vacation.
Unfortunatley when we checked the weather forcast heavy rainfall and strong winds were predicted so we decided it would be best to postpone the trip. To make the most of things we decided to stock up on munchies, download movies and make ourselves comfortable for a weekend indoors. Mother nature of course had other plans. It had been raining since Saturday night and as we watched the news Sunday morning things seemed to be slowly getting worse. Video clips of extremely strong winds and massive flooding in certain parts of Queensland, town evacuations and gigantic waves tearing up the beaches. Concern started to take over as to how much worse things could possibly get and how much of this was heading towards Brisbane. Luckily we are at the top of a hill so flooding wasn't a concern. The massives trees falling down on our house from strong winds was altogether another story.
Just as I was putting the finishing touches on a late lunch the power went out. At this point I realize just how unprepared Jason and I are to handle this. With no flashlights and not a single candle in sight we were forced to rely on the light from the laptop and our phones. Our cozy weekend in suddenly became a rush to keep everything in the fridge cold and a camp out in our living room. By Monday afternoon I am getting extremely restless and with no end in sight to the weather and bad news I decided that we needed to find a place with power to hide out. I have never been so glad to see that flashing neon sign in my life as I was at that moment. A warm, cozy place to relax, charge our phones and have something delicious to eat. Many people from the surrounding neighbourhoods obviously had the same idea. Huddled around the tv, swapping stoires of all the damages we had seen. Feeling grateful that we seemed to have escaped the worst but the same time sad for the people that were forced to leave their homes and belongings to be taken over by this dreadful weather.
Over 48 hours and we are still without power but I feel like I have to right to complain. My heart goes out to all those people that have lost their homes and I hope you have found somewhere safe to stay.

Sunday Confessions

1) I missed the link up last Sunday but I had a good reason. It was my birthday.

2) We have had extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds for the past two days and its going to continue on this week. Hello large umbrella and rain boots.

3) This girl went out in above mentioned weather because I really needed a coffee. I got soaked but it was totally worth it.

4) I just discovered the tv series the Carrie Diaries. Am I a bit old to be watching a show based on high school yes. Its a spin off from Sex and the City though and well I loved that show so I feel like I should continue on watching.

5) I am slowly making process on completing my 30 before 30 list. There is just so much that I want to do with my life I can't decide what to focus on, you've all seen my bucket list haven't you. What would you write down if it was your own list?

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Australia Day

Happy Australia day everyone. I am off to enjoy some festivities and do some serious celebrating.
Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend.

Down time

Sitting outside enjoying the warm summer evening with a delicious latte and the beginnings of what will be my 30 before 30 list. Thats right, I am now in my late 20's. With three years to go until I hit the big 30 I feel it is a good time to focus on certain things that I have daydreamed about. Wanted to accomplish.
I am slowly writing them down. Taking the time to realize if its something that I would love to do in the next couple of years of if its something that can be put on the bucket list to be reviewed later. Eleven items down and 19 to go. It is a slow process but an exciting one.
Do you have a similar list, maybe 25 before 25 or 40 before 40?

Birthday Celebrations

Being born in January I have accepted that I would always have a cold birthday. So the fact that it was in the high 40's yesterday was such a novelty to me. I wanted nothing more then to find a peaceful spot on the beach and relax with a good book. Maybe take a dip to cool off.
It was a perfect day. Even better was the fantastic surprise that Jason had been keeping a secret for the past week. Jason had booked us on the Kookaburra River Queen dinner cruise. This was something that I had wanted to do since we came to Brisbane but just never seemed to make the time to book it. I was so excited when our cab pulled up to the pier and I realized what he had planned. The fact that he remembered this from months ago when we were taking a walk and I noticed the paddle wheeler going down the river and mentioned that it would be neat to experience that.
The cruise lasted for two hours with a buffet style dinner. While enjoying the fabulous dinner we were able to see some amazing sights along the river. There was an adorable older gentleman who came around and instructed Jason to wrap his arm around me so he could take our picture and capture the magical moment.

The pictures I did take are not the best. My camera didn't want to cooperate with me but even still it couldn't ruin my mood. I was on cloud nine.

Lets be adventurers

One of the things that I wanted to focus on this year was planning more mini vacations and day trips to places near by. I want to make sure that we experience all the fantastic things in Australia. That we have no regrets or we should have done that.
I have been browsing the events website for Brisbane and there are a number of celebrations and events coming up over the next couple months that I am really looking forward to. One in particular next week would be the used book expo. To say I am excited is an understatement.
As for the mini vacations I have a couple of ideas about certain places that shouldn't be missed and I took out a couple of guide books from the library to continue my research on this wonderful Country, but a guide can only tell me so much. Thats where all my lovely readers come in. I would love to hear from anyone that has a favourite place to visit or has been to any hot springs, waterfalls, hikes near Brisbane that would be easy to get to. It is always interesting to hear about other peoples favourite spots or secret finds even if its something that you have only read in a magazine.
Help me plan my next mini adventure.

My very first Guest Post

Hello everyone,

Happy hump day. I have finally done my very first guest post. I have to say I was extremely nervous. Its one thing to write about things on my very own blog and be judged for it but to be brave enough to write my opinion on certain subjects and post it on a top notch blog, well thats a big thing.
I absolutely loved my experience working with Vanisha over at Vanisha's life in Australia . She is a wonderful person and has been so extremely helpful with this entire experience. Also one of the first blogs that I joined when I started my own.

If you would like to check it out head on over here.

A Hervey Bay Christmas

I know these pictures are a bit late but like I said in my 2013 goals post, I really am trying to get myself organized and remember to go through my pictures on a regular basis so I can post them on here.

Our Christmas mini break was exactly what we were looking for. It was quiet, it felt like we were the only ones staying at the resort. We strolled along the strand eating ice-cream and taking pictures, watching as the bright blue jelly fish floated on by. We spent many hours swimming in the pool, reading and soaking up the sun.
It was wonderful, tranquil and something I will remember fondly for years to come.

Sunday Confessions

Happy Sunday everyone. I spent the day relaxing on the beach while everyone else fished. It was the perfect day.

1) My biggest pet peeve here in Australia. The fact that every shop I go in to has the air-conditioning blasting but the front doors are wide open. Really, I mean really.

2) I just watched the first episode of the new Sherlock Holmes spinoff Elementary and loved it. The main character is a tad crazy but I'm addicted all ready.

3) I have been really bad at replying to comments lately so I apologize. I do visit everyones blog but I just seem to forget to actually leave a comment. This week I will do better.

4) I have become known as the cool girlfriend with Jason's group of friends here in Australia. Have to say it makes me feel pretty good and I love hanging out with all of them.

5) I have been on the hunt for a new bikini for ages and cannot find a single one that I like enough to buy. Would love any suggestions on good on lines shops to solve this issue.

Join in the fun and link up with some confessions of your own.

So Sticky

Wow today might just be one of those days that I actually feel like the humidity might just be to much for me. Almost. With 84% humidity its like a hair dryer blasting you in the face every time you walk outside. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not really complaining although I have to pack my work clothes and wear something different to work just so I'm not completely sticky by the time I get there. My hair has also decided to have a mind on its own and looks a little something like this

When I start to complain about the weather I like to think about what the weather would be like in Calgary, Alberta where my sisters live. Right now it is minus 6 but feels like minus 15 and looks a little bit like this.

January 8, 2013

2012 was a fantastic year for us. I feel so fortunate that I have been able to experience all the wonderful places that we have travelled to. I grew as a person, more determined then ever to figure out what I really see myself doing as a career in the years to come. Our relationship grew as we took the time to learn about ourselves and who we were as a couple. Enjoying those times where you are so filled with love for the person sitting next to you but also coming together and working through the tough times.

So far 2013 has been amazing. I have spent time at the beach. Reading, relaxing and thinking about all the things I would like to accomplish this year. My fabulous sister Jenny celebrated her 24th birthday on the 6th. Jason and I have been talking a lot about our future and what our next move will be once we feel it is time to move on from Australia. There are still so many places here that I would like to see. I really need to get organized and start planning a trip to see Melbourne and the great ocean road.

Below are some of the things I would like to do/accomplish this year. I don't really make resolutions because lets face it who really sticks to those. This list is more of a reminder then anything.

1) Take a yoga instructor course

2) Complete another 30 day yoga challenge, maybe even extend it to 45

3) Join a book club

4) Be inspired by all those fantastic cooking shows out there and learn to enjoy cooking for myself and others

5) Really commit to this blog. Get organized and post regularly. Remind myself to write down all those ideas I think about

6) Take a photography course

7) Make the time to organize my pictures. Remember to share them. I still have so many that I haven't even posted on the blog or Facebook

8) Write more snail mail. I think I have begun to rely on Facebook and email to much. I love receiving letters in the mail so I should make the time to send letters to friends and family

9) Commit to date night on a regular basis and plan more mini getaways for just the two of us. Sometimes you get so busy with work and life in general that its easy to just sit yourself in front of the tv instead of planning a nice evening out

10) Plan a couple more vacations and slowly check those destinations off my bucket list

Have you set any goals for yourself this year? I would love to hear them.

Sunday Confession

All right I know I missed last week but I have a really good excuse. It was the holidays and I was making the most of my time off from work.

1) I am totally in hibernation mode this month. Its so weird that its hot out in January. Usually this time of year is all about snuggling under the blankets with hot chocolate and a good movie. I really have to motivate myself to go out anywhere.

2) Its my sisters birthday today. I am sad that I am missing the celebration but so glad that it isn't to cold so she is able to enjoy her time at the zoo.

3) The beau and I went shopping today to see if we could snag any great deals and I am so disappointed that he had such a huge success in finding things in his size and I only walked away with one dress. Thats just not right.

4) My birthday is in two weeks and I will be turning 27. I actually haven't minded growing older. Each year I discover a little more about myself and who I would like to become.

5) I having big plans for this year. For once I am organized and have written everything down. Its exciting to talk with Jason about where we see ourselves going this year and what we would like to have accomplished by December.

Start the New Year of right

I thought I would share some quotes that I am loving at the moment to get the New Year started.

This first week has flown by for me and I am struggling to get myself organized. Starting next week though I will be on top of things.

New Design

Notice anything different around here? I am so excited to reveal the new design for this blog. It is everything I wanted. I can't think of a better way to start the new year off then with a totally revamped blog. I started this blog back in June so I am still fairly new at this but I have so many ideas and stories that I would love to share with you all.
As I mentioned before I have been thinking about the things that I would like to accomplish this year as well as starting a 30 things to do before I am 30 list. I am still finalizing these lists at the moment but will post them soon.

A big thank you to Alivia over at Brunch in April who worked oh so hard on this design for me. I greatly appreciate it.
